EmailQuick overview of different web hosting options.
Typical shared hosting solution:
$5 to $15 for a certain package from places like, site5, midphase, anhosting, hostgator, etc etc. Typically they are for general users with one or a few websites with no significant traffic or resource use. Example,,, I started to have sites kicked off of hostgator which only had 40,000 unique visitors a month because supposedly the "cpu use" was exceeding what their TOS allowed. Big packages such as a ton of bandwidth and hdd space is just a gimmick. If you have a serious website with a lot of activity, you will outgrow shared hosting solutions.
Reseller hosting:
Reseller hosting usually ranges from $15 to $40 monthly and typically is the same as shared hosting except your provider will be slightly more lenient with resource use etc. Really all it is the ability to create new stand alone accounts for your clients. Essentially you can sell your own shared hosting accounts.
VPS (virtual private servers):
VPS's are great because typically they are managed (but not always) and give you more control and more power. Sometimes these will include backup services, monitoring and other technical stuff that hands off webmasters don't want to bother with. A great solution that can range from $50 to $150.
Dedicated servers:
Dedicated servers are dedicated servers,,, usually solely yours in all their power. Often you have to take care of more of the technical angles such as backups/security/performance etc but most providers can sell you services to take care of the server for you or you can contract someone to look after it for you. Dedicate servers usually run from $100 to $300 depending on power and service options etc.
My recomentations are http://www.servint.net and http://www.liquidweb.com I will never user shared hosting or reseller hosting again because of the silly TOS that usually comes with them,,, my favorite companies have been servint.net or liquidweb.com for their managed VPS solutions for people that don't know everything about servers but need good hosting,, also for reasonable prices and for the good service.
